Press Release - 22 Jul 2008
14 July 2008 New voter enquiry line opens The NSW Electoral Commission (NSWEC) has opened an enquiry centre to assist the State’s 4.4 million voters with important information leading up to the local council elections on Saturday, 13 September.

The Elector Enquiry Centre is accessible through a toll free number (1300 135 736) and is being staffed between 8.30am and 5.30pm Monday to Friday and on Election Day. “It will support our website which has been updated with important information so no matter where you live, you can access the latest information about these elections,” said NSW Electoral Commissioner Colin Barry.

During last year’s State election more than 200,000 voters called the Elector Enquiry Centre with popular queries such as checking their enrolment status, electorate information, pre-poll and postal voting arrangements and polling place locations.

Mr Barry said the service could assist electors from all council areas with their enquiries. “There are 148 councils having elections. Some councils have wards, some will have referendums and polls and others will vote for their mayor.

For the first time at local government elections, electors can call our 1300 135 736 enquiry centre to get an answer on any election question.”

The NSWEC also provides a telephone typewriter service for the hearing and speech impaired through TTY 02 9247 3568.

The NSWEC website now includes a search function that allows electors to find the nearest polling place to their home. The electoral snapshot includes in-depth information about their local government area, boundary maps, the council’s structure and local demographics. “A virtual tally room will also carry results of the local council elections from 7pm on election night. This is a first for council elections and is part of our decision to conduct these elections to the same high standard as a state or federal election.”

Voters should check their enrolment details online before the roll closes at 6.00pm on 4 August.

SISTER CITY VISIT MAY 2008 - 21 May 2008
Council is preparing for its Sister City visit to the Blacktown City Festival which is being held on Saturday 31st May 2008. This will be Council’s fourth year participating in the Festival.  A display of many different aspects of the region is being prepared including photo boards from the Quirindi Historical Society and the Railway Museum in Werris Creek.  Council will also have members of its Sister City Committee on hand to distribute information on the area and promote to our Sister City the very idyllic lifestyle we enjoy in the country. A Liverpool Plains Shire float will also participate in the street parade through Blacktown on the Saturday morning.  Mrs Norma Munns and the clients from Quirindi Day Options have been very generous in allowing the use of their various works of art for the back of the truck.  The works are sure to be very eye catching. In conjunction with Council’s visit, approximately 45 students from Quirindi High School will travel to Sydney to participate in an inter-school visit with Blacktown’s Mitchell High School and the Whiteriea Performing Arts group from New Zealand.  Activities for this program include a concert featuring Quirindi High School’s Indigenous Dance Group, a Tournament of Minds between Quirindi and Mitchell High Schools and participation in the Blacktown City Festival street parade.   more ..
